I decided today that I would dig up a couple of my very sickly potato plants and see if I got any potatoes. I carefully dig around the first one. What is this I see?
...it looks like a potato! How about that! I dug up two plants and got a variety of different sized potatoes.
We'll have these for dinner tonight, roasted in the oven with some EVOO, garlic and a little rosemary. They look really good, no signs of pests or anything. I must say, I am pretty proud of myself. As I was digging them up, I was just laughing out loud. Hey, it's not much but the entire process fascinates me.The plants did not do well at all, or so I thought. They were very lush and green then all of a sudden seemed to get some kind of blight (Irish potato blight?) and quickly got all wilty. I did not see any signs of pests, but thought perhaps it was too shady and possibly too wet where I had planted them. I really thought for sure I would not even get one potato for my effort, so it was a nice surprise.
Had I left the plants in the ground a bit longer, these little red nubs would've become more potatoes

I still have two more in the ground, I'm going to let them go just a bit longer and see what happens. The risk is that the longer they stay in the ground, the greater chance for them to get mildew, insects, or even dug up by a varmint of some sort. I don't think that'll happen in the raised bed, but you just never know.
I also took an inventory of my tomatoes and was pleased to find two tiny grape tomatoes on the potted tomato plant. That too, is struggling, but I am hopeful as we eat more grape tomatoes than just about anything. I have never had much luck with tomatoes in pots for some reason.

The other tomatoes are doing great, I am pretty pleased with the number of tomatoes on the vine. So far, so good!

I found you. Great looking taters. Congrats. My usd tomato isn't producing more buds after the first 3. I think my whole yard is too shady. I have it in the most sunny hot spot but it still gets shade from canopy of trees. Or maybe it is just that I didn't feed them, so I bought some miracle grow for tomatoes. Any suggestions? Hey, the m.g. brings the tomato total to $37!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is that I have never had much luck with them until now, and I have to think it is because they are in full sun. I haven't used any kind of fertilizer and so far, because it's been so rainy, I have really only watered them once or twice.
ReplyDeleteWe ate the taters tonight, boy were they good! I can't wait to harvest the rest of them and maybe next year I'll grow more.
